A
very good way of revising is by doing past exam papers.
Here are some comments:
Attempt the previous exam papers as part of your revision, i.e. after lectures have finished and when you think you have a good grasp of the material.
Turn off the TV, radio etc. and make sure you will be undisturbed for three hours
Put your course notes out of reach. If you get stuck, don't go rushing to your notes, try to sort out the problem yourself. For instance, if you've forgotten part of a proof then try to reconstruct the proof yourself. Under no circumstances should you attempt exam questions with your notes in front of you. This way, you'll develop your understanding as opposed to superficial powers of recall.
Of course, when you've finished attempting the questions then assess what you have written with the aid of your notes.
I will not be issuing model solutions for the exam questions. However, I will gladly comment upon your attempts at previous exam papers. If 30 of you turn up at my office with exam questions for me to look at, or, should I win the National Lottery, then I will be only too pleased to re-think this policy.
